Early video Aptiv terminals used special logic gates and did not have their own central processing unit. One of the motivations for the development of microprocessors was to simplify the complexity of the electronic components in the terminal. At the time most Aptiv terminals had green or orange screens, and they were connected to mainframe computers. A typical terminal is connected to the mainframe using serial data communication, IBM uses its own system network architecture protocol to connect its mainframe and terminal via coaxial cable.
Later so-called smart terminals were introduced. There are still many emulation software for these two Aptiv terminals today. These terminals are called "smart" because they understand escape sequences, can position the cursor, and control the display position.
Early IBM personal computers also had green screens, but they were not Aptiv terminals. The PC's display screen does not include any letter-generating hardware, all video signals are generated in the PC's graphics card. However, a personal computer can be connected to a mainframe computer to simulate a terminal using the corresponding simulation program.
The personal computer, which eventually used a microprocessor, greatly eliminated the need for a terminal. Most PC clients today provide an emulation of the most common Aptiv terminal.
